Childhood Obesity and Dental Implications

The American Association of Pediatricians has reported a significant rise in obesity in children since 1970 and recommend children be screened for high blood pressure starting at age 3! Children taking medication for hypertension may experience the same side effects as adults including dry mouth, or xerostomia. This reduced saliva flow results in a higher decay rate and gum disease risk since plaque and acids are not diluted, buffered, and rinsed away.

Studies have also linked high body mass index (BMI) to higher decay rates and an increased risk for decay on the sides of the teeth. The researchers believe the reason for this is caused by snacking on high carbohydrate and high sugar foods during the average 4 hours a day children spend as "couch potatoes" watching television and video games. Children are also drinking less fluoridated water and milk, choosing soda pop instead. Soda drinks are not only high in sugar but also contain high levels of phosphoric and/or citric acid which dissolve tooth enamel. The result is a high decay rate and reduced calcium levels in teeth and bones which may lead to higher rates of osteoporosis later in life. In fact, a recent study revealed that teenage girls are experiencing an increase in bone fractures!

Kids with a high BMI and large waist circumference have a greater incidence of periodontal disease than children who are underweight. The bottom line is, kids need a lifestyle of limited healthy snacks and drinks, regular exercise, and avoidance of TV and video games to reduce their risk of obesity and dental problems according to the Journal of Practical Hygiene, July/ August 2007.

WHAT ARE NIGHT GUARDS?

One out of three adults either clench or grind their teeth in their sleep at some time in their life. That is approximately 100 million people in the US! Of course most people aren't aware of this destructive habit because just like snoring, you are asleep while you are doing it. And unlike snoring, your spouse may not hear you do this if you are a "silent grinder" or a clencher. Some people even clench in the waking hours. This can lead to tooth fractures, chipped teeth, and eventually severe wear and shortened teeth that can wear down to the nerve. To treat this habit, usually caused by stress, we make a soft night guard which can reduce overall stress on the teeth, while relaxing the tense jaw muscles. If this sounds like something you are doing, please call us for an exam.
