Sippy Cups - Hidden Danger!

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is significant cavity risk for toddlers who use sippy cups, sipping on them throughout the day. AGD spokesperson, Julie Ann Barna, DMD, MAGD says the spill proof cups are more like a bottle and are effective as a transitional device to shift children away from a bottle. However, parents often fill the cups with sweetened drinks and allow the children to suck on the cups throughout the day. Constant bathing of the teeth with a liquid sugar solution or juice can cause a dramatic rise in tooth decay.

"Baby bottle>synadrome" is a dramatic increase in tooth decay caused by giving a child a bottle containing a sweetened drink to suck on all night long. "Sippy cup Synadrome" is essentially a similar situation, occuring during the daytime, that most parents aren't aware of. Tooth decay is the #1 most common chronic childhood disease and is five times more common than asthma. The soone the child can get weaned off the sippy cup, the better. In the meantime, limit the use of the cup and try to use water instead of sweetened liquids.

Asthma-tooth Decay Link Suspected

According to the American Denteal Association News, if a patient uses medications to control asthma, you may need to more aggressively monitor his dental health as well. Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina decided to examine whether there was a connection between the two most common causes of absenteeism among school children-asthma and tooth decay. In 655 patients between ages 1 and 15, they found that the numbers of decayed, missing and filled tooth were significantly higher in those who had been diagnosed with asthma. Almost one in five of patients studied (125) were diagnosed asthmatics. Dr. Salinas notes that children with asthma who had the highest decay rate tended to be those who were young, usually under age 5. Investigators suspect that asthma medications, like Albuterol, can contribute to dry mouth, making asthmatic patients more susceptible to tooth decay and periodontal disease.
